About us

Our roots

The history of Degens began with Gustav Degens in 1930. He had a small import and export company in Rotterdam that sold cleaning products. Gustav regularly visited butchers shops and at a certain moment started selling simple herbs and spices.

A tradition of innovation

Over the years Gustav Degens’ company became the supplier of herbs and spices. Gustav was a true innovator; he was one of the first to put blended herb mixes on the market and, in around 1960, was a leader in the field of soya. To this day, the desire to innovate is a driving force within Degens. Our most recent developments are the crumbs and decoration mixes. They give a finishing touch to a variety of products.

Growth and cooperation

Between 1981 and 1988 Degens merged with existing companies, Wijko and Kuijpers van den Boom, to become Unifine. Each company had its own background in the sauce, herbs, spices and dry mixes segments. Initially, Unifine was part of Cosun, but later it carried on independently under the name Intertaste.

New organisational structure

On 1 January 2014, Intertaste divided the organisation up into three business units: Degens, Intertaste Food Ingredients and Intertaste Finished Products. In this way the Degens brand name returned with a clear focus. In future, we will be focussing fully on the support of traditional specialists in fresh products.

From 6 December 2016, Degens is part of Solina Group.
